Keven Lewis, trumpet
Keven's love of the trumpet was obvious from the very first day it was in his possession. Blessed to come through a dedicated and well developed school music system, Keven had the opportunity to perform in Carnegie Hall twice before graduating high school.
Keven received a full scholarship to attend Brigham Young University-Idaho where he began his university study in the fall of 2004. In his fist semester he won second trumpet position in the universities top orchestra and top jazz band, moving to principal position one semester later. He also held principal positions in the top Wind Ensemble (trumpet, cornet, euphonium) and was a semi-frequent member of the Idaho Falls Symphony Orchestra and Rexburg, Idaho Symphony.
Following College, Keven moved from Idaho to Utah where he began performing, recording, and touring with Natural Roots, a reggae band based in Salt Lake City. This association put Keven in a position to record with a number of other reggae groups. He also started teaching at the Best-in-Music Education Center in Orem Utah, where he taught students on all brass instruments.
Keven then moved back to Rockford Michigan and began teaching trumpet privately, building a studio of more than 35 students. During this time he also coached the Rockford Marching Band, gave sectionals for the Rockford Jazz Band, Rockford Middle School festival bands, acted as an adjudicator/clinician for Rockford Michigan solo festivals, and was the interim musical director of the Rockford Community Orchestra.
He left Rockford in 2013 to begin graduate school at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he obtained a Master of Music degree in the spring of 2015. He chose to stay at the University of Illinois to obtain a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree, anticipated in the spring of 2018.
He is currently in his third year as the Trumpet Studios Teaching Assistant, responsible for teaching trumpet methods courses for music education students, teaching trumpet lessons to non-major students, coach/direct the University of Illinois Trumpet Ensemble, and performing in the University of Illinois Graduate Brass Quintet. He is an active participant in top university ensembles as well as in the local musical community. He has participated in multiple recording sessions with the Illinois Modern Ensemble
Keven holds a Bachelor of Musical Arts degree from Brigham Young University-Idaho, and a Master of Music degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His teachers include Daniel Thrower, Ryan Nielsen, K. Newell Dayley, Charles Daval and Ronald Romm.
