Robert maintains an active performance schedule as both a classical and jazz musician. He currently plays with Transit Brass, the Iron Post Jazz Orchestra, Sycamore Brass and regularly performs with symphony orchestras in Central Illinois. In April 2017 he was awarded the Robert Swenson Award from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign School of Music. He was previously the principal trumpet of the University of Illinois Wind Symphony and was awarded the Guy M. Duker Symphony Band Award from the University of Illinois Bands in May 2016. In March 2016 he was a semi-finalist in the National Trumpet Competition graduate solo division. He has performed with the Illinois Brass Quintet, Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Heartland Festival Orchestra, Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia da Camera Chamber Orchestra, and Urbana Pops Orchestra. He has been a featured cornet soloist with the University of Illinois Summer Band, played under jazz great John Clayton in the Lionel Hampton Youth Jazz Orchestra and was the second trumpet in the BYU-Idaho Faculty Brass Quintet from 2013-2014.
In February of 2016 Robert created Transit Brass, a brass ensemble that is focused on writing and performing original music. Robert is one of the main composers and arrangers for this ensemble and regularly performs with this group in concert halls, schools, churches and other local music venues. In July of 2017, Transit Brass was the Artist in Residence at the Fredericksburg Brass Institute in Fredericksburg, VA. Robert is the Adjunct Instructor of Trumpet at the University of Illinois Springfield. He also coaches a high school Honor Brass Quintet sponsored by the Conservatory of Central Illinois, and is the director of Jazz Band II at Champaign Central High School. Robert has also taught at the Banks Bridgewater Lewis Jazz Summer Camp and Illinois Summer Youth Music.
He can be heard on the CD Astral Canticle released April 2015 under Nimbus Records with the University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra as co-principal and section trumpet.
Robert holds a B.M. in Music Education from Brigham Young University-Idaho, a M.M. in Trumpet Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is pursuing a D.M.A. in Jazz Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He studies with Tito Carrillo and Charles Daval. Previous trumpet instructors include founding Canadian Brass member Ronald Romm, Dr. Ryan Nielsen, Dr. K. Newell Dayley and David Evans.
